Clinical trials in portal hypertension: an update and future directions

Professor Tripathi, Honorary Professor at the Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy and Clinical Director of Research at University Hospitals Birmingham, completed his specialist training in Edinburgh. He was awarded a MD for clinical and haemodynamic studies in portal hypertension in 2005 by the University of Edinburgh. He has been a Consultant Hepatologist and Liver Transplant Physician in University Hospitals Birmingham since 2008.

In this lecture Professor Tripathi will describe his journey through clinical research in portal hypertension that led to seminal publications and changes in clinical practice. He will focus on studies of non-selective beta-blockers in portal hypertension, and interventions for prevention and treatment of variceal haemorrhage.

He will provide an update on the current UK multicentre clinical trials in portal hypertension that he leads with support from Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit, University of Birmingham, and conclude his lecture with a glimpse of what the future may hold.
